Knowledge Checkpoint: Describe the three main types of government spending

  • Current Spending: This involves the day-to-day expenses needed to keep public services operational, such as schools or the NHS. For example, the UK public sector pay bill, which includes 5.6 million UK public sector employees, is part of this and accounts for around a quarter of all UK government spending.
  • Capital Spending: This type of spending funds long-term projects like building hospitals, schools, and infrastructure. It can boost the country's economic growth in the long run. An example is the High Speed 2 (HS2) railway line, a project that is estimated to cost £98bn in capital spending.
  • Transfer Spending: This is targeted spending to low-income households and pension payments through welfare programmes. It plays a redistributive role in the economy. For instance, the OBR estimates that 54% of this bill goes to state pensions.
